Submissions (Updated July 23, 2005)

Red China is currently accepting submissions for poetry, fiction, visual art, and essays. Understanding what we appreciate will develop by reading the magazine. We are interested in both “experimental” and “formal” work. So long as your work is original and provocative, we'd like to read or look at it.

We ask that as of now you do not inquire about the title of our magazine in your cover letters. Just believe that it suits us at this time, and makes us happy.

Note: And this is important: We will not in any way respond to anything that does not follow these guidelines.

Details

Fiction and Poetry: Submissions should be attached as MS Word documents. Please do not talk about your actual piece in your cover letter, save mentioning its title.
Fictioners please send no more than 6,000 words to fiction@redchinamagazine.com. As of now we are not accepting parts of novels. Memoir pieces are discouraged, unless they are good, as opposed to being indulgent. Please send only one piece at a time.

Poets please send no more than 10 poems to poetry@redchinamagazine.com. If these poems are selected from a larger (unpublished) series, please include an incredibly brief description of the collection or series as a whole. Again, we are not looking for previously published work.

Visual Art: Submissions may be attached in most any format you want, Windows-oriented. Please include a few details of your images. It always aids us in assessing your work. Artists, please, never send us links to your website.
Images can be of any size, but as a rough guideline, we can say that your images should probably not be any bigger than 700 pixels in height or width. Details can be nicely sized squares around 200 by 200. Roughly, we find that 200 dpi is sufficient for us to make decisions on your work.

We should say that we're interested in exploring more interactive artwork. We can feature sound, for instance, so if you have an installation with sound, we can display it. We're also interested in working with you on ongoing projects.
We ask that your artwork has not appeared in print. We don't mind, however, if it has shown at a gallery or open studio.

Please send no more than 10 pieces to art@redchinamagazine.com.

Essays and Papers: Queries should be sent in the body of an email. We are interested in your articles dealing with cultural/social criticism. We are looking for incendiary pieces, whether charting left or right wing boundaries is unimportant, so long as the work is cohesive, well researched. We are also looking for reviews (book, movie, album, car, video game, soft drink or otherwise) that are thoroughly investigated and beautifully written. We aren't interested in personal essays right now.
Please send queries to essays@redchinamagazine.com.
